Every year at the end of October, multiplexes across the world are filled with movies designed to shock and terrify their audiences. This Halloween is no exception, with a wide variety of horror movies hitting cinema screens in time to provide a frightening night out on October 31st. With remakes, sequels, chilling new stories and 3D extravaganzas all vying for cinemagoers attention, just trying to decide what to watch on Halloween can leave you feeling a little uneasy. This handy breakdown should help you decide on which film to spend October 31st recoiling in horror from. So let’s start with my list of Halloween movies:
If an all-out fright fest isn’t your thing, there are two new releases which take an original approach to Halloween-friendly filmmaking. Hereafter is the only Halloween release with any chance of troubling the Oscars. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Hereafter is a supernatural thriller that tells three stories with a supernatural bent. Damon’s character is a factory worker who speaks to the dead, while the other stories concern a French journalist who survives a near death experience and two English boys who don’t. Critics have called it ‘spiritual’ and ‘romantic’, while Eastwood describes it as a chick flick ‘that men can enjoy too’. This is about as far as Halloween movies get from Saw 3D. It’s a must see and definitely should not miss on my list of Halloween movies.

Burial is this year’s most boldly original Halloween offering. It stars Ryan Reynolds as an American contractor in Iraq who falls afoul of the locals and winds up buried inside a coffin for most of the movie. This might not sound like the most thrilling concept in the world but this tense and terrifying film has been getting rave reviews and may well be this year’s most genuinely horrifying release.

More traditional Halloween horror movie fare is served up by Case 39 and Paranormal Activity 2. Case 39 stars Renee Zellwegger as a social worker who saves a child from abusive parents. The only problem is, the child’s evil! Case 39 will provide plenty of scream out loud moments and a story to get stuck into between the ‘jump’ moments. You’ll know if this sounds like your kind of film and Zellwegger’s sympathetic performance in the lead role helps make Case 39 a good choice for a Halloween date movie.

Paranormal Activity 2 is the sequel to a film that was as fresh as it was terrifying and proved a big hit both with critics and at the box office. The original was presented as if it were a true story comprised of found footage from video cameras set-up around a haunted house by the family that were unfortunate enough to be living there. The sequel is presented in the same Blair Witch Project style, though the studio has been keeping quiet about any plot details. The trailers haven’t shed much light on the story either, though they have confirmed that one of 2010’s most anticipated horror movies also looks set to be one of its scariest.

There are also two high-profile horror movie remakes arriving in cinemas before October 31st. The better of these looks set to be Let Me In, which is a remake of the 2008 hit Swedish film Let the Right One In. It tells the story of a twelve year-olds relationship with a vampire and plays like a chilling twist on the recurring theme of the Twilight saga.

Night of the Demons is based on a little-remembered 1988 horror film and lives up to the original by being equally forgettable. It’s a standard horror flick that traps a load of good looking not-so-young actors and actresses in a house with a load of old demons and presents you with the resulting carnage. If you want to see good looking people meet horrific ends this Halloween and don’t want to fork out for 3D glasses for the privilege, this is your film.

There are two 3D extravaganzas to gawp at on October 31st if you want a truly immersive horror experience. While Jason Vorhees had to be transplanted to space in order to provide Friday the 13th Part 10 with a new plot device, the advent of 3D technology means that Saw 3D doesn’t have to take place onboard a spaceship. You know the drill by know (and the hammer, vice grip, titular saw and other misused tools): the villainous Jigsaw sticks his victims in gore-inducing scenarios which they must then hack and cleave their way out of. This time it’s in 3D. Ten movies into the series, you’ll probably know if this is the Halloween film for you.

My Soul to Take is the first movie written and directed by horror master Wes Craven since 1994 and you can expect the creator of Freddy Krueger and the Scream series to serve up something special for his first foray into 3D. My Soul to Take tells the tale of legendary serial killer ‘The Ripper’, who returns to the type of quiet town that always seems to attract these sorts of crazies to kill the seven children born on the night that he died. The premise sounds similar to the wildly successful Nightmare on Elm Street series and this may well be the best option available at cinemas for fans of full-on horror movies.
